Webserver Raspberry Pi

This website is proudly hosted on a Raspberry Pi 5. This page shows local performance, installed packages, security aspects and monitoring options as well as power options.
01

Hardware

Small computer. Serious server. Equipped with fast NVMe storage and a modern arm linux environment, it proves that a tiny computer can be capable for web hosting, monitoring and countless experiments.

Hardware: Raspberry Pi 5 / 8GB Version
NIC: Internal Intel ETH0 1Gbit/s
NIC2: External RT USB3 Nic 5Gbit/s
Storage: 256 GB NVMe
Tower: Pironman Max
02

Software

Having worked with Debian-based systems before, I already feel comfortable with its structure, tools and package management. Ubuntu builds on that familiar foundation while offering excellent hardware and driver support for the Raspberry Pi 5.

OS: Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS
Software: nginx, ssh, joe
Experimental Software/Hardware: DS18B20 Thermometer

Monitoring

Althought the monitoring solution is fairly basic, it provides a useful overview of the server's health at a glance. Key metrics make it easy to spot potential issues and quickly see where the system might need attention. There is even a metadata section, to hide more infos...

Fastfetch gives you all the infos by default, the main problem is to parse the stuff the way you want to have it. I spend a lot of time for this custom fastfetch. But the result is ok. (Btw: If you have any improvements to this - let me know @ phil@placzek.ch). The Magic behind Metadata is to hide values in one simple line.

The values, Datacenter Temperature and NIC2 are in preparation.

raspi fastfetch
custom build of my fastfetch - quite clean, simple and functional

Power Consumption

The Raspberry Pi is not a very demanding piece of hardware. At idle, the system consumes only around 5.3 watts. Power efficiency was never the main goal of this project, but running a capable little server for just few watts is certainly a welcome bonus. And saving a bit of money never hurts me. In Wetzikon, a kWh is at about 0.3.- Swiss Francs. So with that in mind. Let us do the math.

1 Day: 0.1272 kWh -> 0.038 CHF
1 Month: 3.816 kWh -> 1.14 CHF
1 Year: 43.43 kWh -> 13.93 CHF
